The extraction-shooter genre has matured fast. What was a Tarkov-only conversation in 2020 is now a crowded shelf with AAA budgets, free-to-play console releases, hardcore milsim picks, fantasy variants, and a growing Web3 corner. The list below is built from May 2026 data: live player counts, confirmed roadmaps, and signals about each studio's commitment to its game.
If you want a single recommendation, ARC Raiders is the easiest entry point and Tarkov is still the deepest. If you want something to bet on for the next twelve months, scroll to ten.
The 2026 Extraction Shooter Tier List
1 ARC Raiders
Status: Live (released October 2025)
Engine: Unreal Engine 5
Studio: Embark Studios
The biggest and most polished AAA extraction shooter on the market. Embark's third-person PvPvE pits squads against giant hostile robots called ARCs on a post-apocalyptic Earth, while other player teams compete for the same extractions. Cross-platform between PC, PS5, and Xbox Series, with strong social hooks. Player count has cooled significantly from its November 2025 peak, when it sat in Steam's top 5, to roughly 90,000 concurrent in April 2026, but in absolute terms that is still one of the largest extraction-shooter populations in existence. Cheating issues and endgame thinness are the main complaints. A new map is slated for May 2026.
2 Escape from Tarkov + Tarkov: Arena
Status: Live (1.0 released November 2025)
Engine: Unity
Studio: Battlestate Games
The genre's anchor and still its hardcore standard. Tarkov 1.0 shipped in late 2025, with the sister product Tarkov: Arena offering a stripped-down PvP loop without raid-loot persistence for players who want fewer hours per match. Battlestate published a 2026 roadmap with two new maps confirmed (Icebreaker and End of the Line), DLSS 4.5 support in Q1, and a new boss plus live event in Q2. Paid entry only, with multiple edition tiers, but every other game on this list owes Tarkov its template.
3 Delta Force (Hazard Operations)
Status: Live
Engine: Unreal Engine 4 (UE5 migration scheduled for H2 2026)
Studio: TiMi Studio Group / Tencent
The only AAA free-to-play extraction mode currently shipping on console. Delta Force packages three formats under one launcher: Warfare for Battlefield-style large-scale combat, Hazard Operations for extraction, and a single-player Black Hawk Down campaign. Free entry, cosmetic-only monetization. The game hit 250,000 Steam concurrent shortly after launch, and the console rollout to PS5 and Xbox Series in late 2025 opened the door wider. The announced UE5 upgrade for "Delta Force 2" in the second half of 2026 makes this a forward-looking pick, not just a "what is it right now" pick.
4 Arena Breakout: Infinite
Status: Live (left beta September 2025)
Engine: Unreal Engine 4
Studio: Magic Cube Studio / Tencent (publisher: Level Infinite)
Tencent's standalone PC tactical extraction shooter, free-to-play and first-person only. The PC version is a full adaptation of the mobile original, not a port, and post-launch the team pivoted away from pay-to-win toward cosmetic and quality-of-life monetization. Stable around 30,000 to 35,000 Steam concurrent in May 2026 with regular seasonal updates. The most realistic free Tarkov alternative on PC, and the genre's smoothest performer on mid-spec hardware.
5 Hunt: Showdown 1896
Status: Live (relaunched as 1896 in August 2024)
Engine: CryEngine 5.11
Studio: Crytek
Strictly speaking, Hunt is an extraction-adjacent bounty-hunt shooter rather than a pure extraction game, but the loop is unmistakable: hunt a monster boss in a Gothic 1890s bayou, banish it, then try to extract the bounty while rival hunter teams hear every gunshot you fire. Permadeath progression on hunters keeps the stakes meaningful. The audio design and atmosphere remain the strongest in the genre. Crytek's 2025-26 roadmap covers raid player-count increases, returning content, and ongoing anti-cheat work.
6 Gray Zone Warfare
Status: Live (Early Access, version 0.4 "Spearhead")
Engine: Unreal Engine 5.5
Studio: MADFINGER Games
The hardcore milsim entry. Gray Zone runs a PvEvP open-world tactical loop on a quarantined Southeast Asian island, closer to "open-world Tarkov" than match-based extraction. Long sightlines, mission-driven faction progression, brutal realism. The Spearhead update in late March 2026 caused a 1,076 percent jump in concurrent players and proved Madfinger could win the audience back. PC only at paid early-access entry. Worth watching for what extraction looks like when the open world is the structure rather than the lobby.
7 Off the Grid
Status: Live (Early Access)
Engine: Unreal Engine 5
Studio: Gunzilla Games
Gunzilla's "Extraction Royale" hybrid, set in a near-future cyberpunk world directed by Neill Blomkamp. The signature mechanic is the cyberlimb system: more than 30 swappable arms and legs that you can loot off downed opponents on the fly, each with its own ability, from healing drones to mobility tools. The Web3 layer (the GUN token on the GUNZ network, an Avalanche subnet, with a Solana expansion) handles item ownership but is not gameplay-gated, so traditional gamers play the same way as crypto players. Steam concurrent has cooled to roughly 8,000 in May 2026 and reviews have softened, but it remains the only AAA-budget Web3-optional extraction shooter shipping on console.
8 Shrapnel
Status: Live (Early Access, launched March 2026)
Engine: Unreal Engine 5
Studio: Neon Machine
The speculative pick. Shrapnel is a 4v4 objective-driven extraction FPS with Operator abilities, built by a team of ex-Halo and Call of Duty veterans, with optional player-owned cosmetic and Operator NFTs on Avalanche. It just launched into Early Access in March 2026 after years of development. Neon Machine raised $19.5M for the global launch and brought in a new CEO from Xbox. Player retention data is too early to call meaningfully, but the studio pedigree and the smaller 4v4 format give it a path to carve out a niche the bigger games are not contesting.
9 Dark and Darker
Status: Live (Early Access since August 2023)
Engine: Unreal Engine 5
Studio: Ironmace
The genre-diversity pick. Dark and Darker is a fantasy dungeon extraction game with melee, magic, and bows in a torch-lit medieval crawl. Loot the dungeon, escape via the portal, do it before another party kills you. Sold via Ironmace's own launcher and ChafGames after a tangled platform history that included a Steam re-release and an Epic delisting. The Nexon trade-secrets ruling against Ironmace in February 2025 created legal overhang, but the project survived it and Ironmace continues to ship updates. Steam concurrent sits around 4,000 in May 2026, well below the 2024 peak, but the audience is sticky and committed. The only credible fantasy entry in the genre.
10 VS Protocol 🔥
Status: Alpha/Beta
Engine: Unreal Engine 5
Studio: AJ Studios (Albert Barry, co-founder)
Closing out the list, VS Protocol is the upcoming entry that does not look like the rest of the list. No project token, no inflationary GameFi loop, no pay-to-win. Unranked play is fully free, and ranked play uses mainstream crypto (Solana, Avalanche, Ethereum, stablecoins) for tier entries and ammo, with players extracting their haul in those same currencies. Anti-cheat is the Cyberlete AI integration, with wallet-level enforcement so a banned cheater cannot just spin up a new account. Built by a two-person founding team in South Africa from a 23-day hackathon prototype that placed third at Solana's Cape Town Cypherpunk bounty. The most exciting upcoming entry in the genre and the one competitive players should be watching as the 2026 alpha and beta open up.

How Do I Choose the Best Extraction Shooter?
The 2026 extraction-shooter shelf is the deepest it has ever been, but most of these games solve the same problem in slightly different shapes. The interesting frontier is what happens when economic design changes the loop, not just the geography. That is the bet VS Protocol is making, and it is the reason it sits at ten on a list of games already worth your time.
